a mix of engineering complexity and heritage-sensitive detailing

The University of Newcastle’s new Central Coast Campus development required substantial structural works to support the new facility’s foundations and surrounding infrastructure.

Our scope covered the complete construction of the structural basement walls, extensive retaining walls, an on-site detention (OSD) tank, and a feature heritage brick wall along the driveway.

This combination of large-scale structural works and detailed heritage craftsmanship showcased our versatility and attention to quality across all stages of the build.

Duration & Scope

The works took 1 year to complete, delivered in alignment with the overall campus construction program.

Our scope included:

  • Full construction of reinforced concrete structural basement walls.
  • Large retaining walls designed for long-term stability and load-bearing performance.
  • Installation of an on-site detention (OSD) tank to manage stormwater efficiently.
  • Restoration and construction of a heritage-style brick wall in the campus driveway, blending tradition with modern structural integrity.

Challenges

The project involved a mix of engineering complexity and heritage-sensitive detailing.

Key challenges included:

  • Managing large, heavy structural elements in a confined construction zone.
  • Precise formwork and reinforcement placement to meet engineering tolerances.
  • Coordinating civil works, drainage integration, and structural sequencing without delaying the broader build schedule.
  • Achieving a high-quality heritage brick finish that matched the existing character of the site.

Major Achievements:

  • Delivering all structural works to engineering specifications and on time.
  • Executing both large-scale civil / structural elements and fine heritage detailing to the highest standard.
  • Seamless integration of the OSD tank and retaining walls into the site’s design and drainage system.

Outcomes

The completed works at the University of Newcastle’s new Central Coast Campus provided a robust and functional structural foundation for the facility, while enhancing the site’s aesthetic through the carefully constructed heritage brick wall.

Our team’s ability to deliver heavy structural works alongside intricate heritage finishes demonstrates our capability to handle diverse project demands, from civil infrastructure to architectural detailing.
